Images of The Royalist Hotel Stow-on-the-Wold

General Information

Part of the structure in old-fashioned times was also known as The Eagle and Child Inn. The extraordinary name derives from Sir John Stanley in the fourteenth century. Legend recalls the adoption of a child in an eagle's nest. The last battle of the 1st English Civil War in 1646 took site at Stow-on-the-Wold, and reputedly Digbeth Street is so named as the spot literally ran with blood from The Royalist casualties. The ducks were bathing from the blood, hence the 'Duck Bath'. There have been a lot of historic discoveries at The Royalist, including a 10th century Saxon shoe, 2 crucifixes, a Royalist commander's letter, and a tunnel that leads from the brasserie to the church across the avenue - there is also evidence of a bear pit. Peaceful visible in the suites are the witches' marks, an antique frieze and the thousand-year-old timbers. Evidence suggests that The Royalist began as part of a Saxon community as long ago as 514AD. In 949AD, Saxon Duke Aethelmar founded The Royalist as a hospice that was to shelter lepers - one able to tranquil uncover a leper hole in the oldest part of the cellar!! During the sixteenth century the structure was known as Porch House, and this was the home of the Shellard family.
