General Information

The Greyhound Hotel in Shap is a firstrate Westmorland hostelry dating back to 1680. Based just five minutes from combination 39 of the M6, with scenic vistas of the Lake District fells, it's the ideal stopping off point for travelers and walkers alike, specifically those on Wainwright's prominent Coast to Coast stroll. The guesthouse features 11 en-suite apartments (6 standard, five deluxe), 2 restaurants, a broad brasserie with an open log fire and a big range of wines and genuine ales to enjoy in beautiful surroundings. All of our eleven bedrooms are en-suite and have tea & facilities of making coffee. Our 5 recent dainty bedrooms, upgraded March 2009, brag fell vistas, flat screen televisions and current en-suite bathrooms or shower suites (see pictures below). All prices comprise our dainty Cumbrian breakfast (which consists of Bellas' world championship cumberland sausage) in addition to westmorland black pudding and free-range local eggs catered in the Whinfell dining room. Initially a grange dating back to probably the fifteenth Century, newlyweds Richard and Ann Whinfel stretched their lately inherited buildings and opened The Greyhound in 1680 as a training inn where the “New Times" horse-drawn coaches used to stop. In the kitchen, there exists a date stone which commemorates their wedding (see below) from the 27th August 1680. Further to, there is evidence of early stables through the arched shape of the breakfast room window. Work must have been gorgeous as Richard and Ann stretched west in 1684, and simultaneously built Green Farm (on the opposite side of the major road) to supply the Inn with its fresh make.
