Saffron Walden takes the 2nd part of its name from the threatening fortification of Walden Castle, erected by the Normans after the Conquest, and the 1st from the rare and precious saffron crocus, for which the city became celebrated, used in medicine, cooking and as the source of a wealthy yellow dye. Saffron Walden itself is an unspoiled state city, with narrow streets and ancient buildings, a lot of of them 'pargeted'. The city's specialist boutiques are well worth investigating. Audley End, England's biggest Jacobean manor house, is on the doorstep, and the gorgeous uni city of Cambridge is exactly 12 miles away. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford and the racing city of Newmarket are also within driving distance.
