General Information
The George Inn is found just 6 miles south of the Roman town of Bath, off the A36. An astonishing building oozing with heritage and tales to be told. The structure you see today was constructed by the Carthusian monks from surrounding Hinton Priory to accommodate all the travelers and merchants arriving for the annual wool fairs that were held here in the countryside from the late 13th century. During the seventeenth centuty, there were plenty of celebrated guests to The George Inn, 2 of whom were Samuel Pepys and The Duke of Monmouth. The Duke himself the illegitimate son of Charles II headed a rebellion against King James II and used The George as his headquarters after his escape from Bath on the 26th June 1685. Sadly in the eighteenth century the affluence of Norton St Philip declined but the treveller route to Bath ensured The George continued to trade. By the nineteenth century The George had become famous as an historic Inn and is featured in plenty of watercolours, engravings & photographs. The George Inn features also been used in a lot of films and period dramas, newly it features been seen in “The Remains of the Day” & “The Canterbury Tales”, also in the TV serialisations of “Persuasion” & “Moll Flanders”. Centrally, it sports an enchanting enclosed patio with wooden art gallery, and the formal dining districts are housed in the ancient storage ranges built for the linen and cloth sold at all the markets on the mead. Our function apartment is situated in 'the Dungeon' – a wonderful stone suite below st level with alcoves full of pewter plates & a delicious intimate feel. A group of up to 20 able to have dinner in solitude or at other times it serves to supplement the brasserie space for drop-in visitors. The George is a common place for groups of up to 14 to visit and have a get-together in the one site. What more could you need? - lodging, fine food and prime ales all at your fingertips - and only miles from Bath where you can investigate during the day, or such treveller sites as Longleat, Farleigh Hungerford & Bradford on Avon.
