General Information
In 1435 the 1st holiday hotel for tourists was opened on Sk-'rau st in Riga. It was constructed on the foundations of the Castle of the Order of the Brotherhood of Swordsmen and holds the long corridor plan typical of a monastery with little suites known as cells.
In expanding the structure at the end of the sixteenth century, the City's Burgomaster Nikolauss Eke, who was accused by the dwellers of Riga of lining his own pocket with funds from the City Treasury, had apparently decided to polish up his reputation by opening a sanctuary for the widows of Guild's craftsmen here.
Since the summer months of 2005 the cottage is once more operating as a holiday hotel s-- "Ekes Konvents" which features been scrupulously reconstructed by experts specialising in Latvia's historic architecture.
