Heritage and Le Dodici Lune (The Twelve Moons)Located in the center of Matera’s “Sassi” (“the stones”), Le Dodici Lune is the ideal place from which to absorb evocative landscape which takes you back ten, 000 years in time. So much so, that Matera’s Sassi and garden of the rupestrian churches are listed by Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) as world history. Unesco describes them as “the most celebrated, intact sample of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean district ….. The 1st inhabited zone dates from the Palaeolithic, whilst later settlements illustrate several necessary stages in human heritage. Some experts consider Matera to be the oldest town in the world. Le Dodici Lune is situated in the “Sasso Caveoso” (south-facing part of the Sassi, structured like a roman amphitheatre with cave dwellings following the vale side), close to the antique wall that encircled the town during the 6th century Longobardo rule, under which the metro constructions, initially defined as cave-houses, appeared.
