General Information

This historic Georgian hotel is nestled in 2 acres of Derbyshire hillside, and the most of suites have fine views over the Derwent Valley, offering a quiet vicinity in which to unbend and relax. The major A6 is only a short way below, and follows the river via the "Little Switzerland" landscape of limestone cliffs and steep woody slopes. The guesthouse dates back to the 1780's and will have had numerous distinguished persons cross its threshold, including Lord Byron, who was so moved by his stay to Matlock Bath that he was inspired to etch a poem on the breakfast room window. Queen Victoria visited when restful a young princess and signed the same pane. The Byron Room, so called because this is the apartment where Lord Byron dined when he etched the eminent 'unfinished' poem on a pane of window glass, is used as a confidential breakfast room for smaller parties and celebrations.
